KamakuraItineraryHase dera

Nestled in the heart of Japan, Kamakura offers an abundance of delights for those seeking adventure. While the famous Slam Dunk steals the spotlight with its bustling atmosphere, this quaint town holds much more within its embrace. In just two days, I found myself captivated by its charm, reluctantly bidding farewell before fully unraveling all its treasures.

The Beauty of Kamakura: Gazing at Mt. Fuji Across the Sea

One of the highlights of Kamakura is the opportunity to gaze at the majestic Mt. Fuji across the sea. Get off at Shichirigahama station, and take a leisurely stroll westward toward Enoshima-Kokomae Station. You'll be treated to picturesque scenes along the way, with Mt. Fuji serving as a breathtaking backdrop. Even a casual snap of the road turns into a masterpiece, capturing the journey to Fuji with every step.

Hasedera Temple: A Serene Escape

Hasedera, a buddhist temple and gardens dating from the 8th century, is another highly recommended gem in Kamakura. It's especially beautiful if you can visit just as it opens in the early morning when there are virtually no crowds. Ascend the stone steps and witness exquisite Japanese gardens and a teahouse offering a panoramic view of the coastline from above.

The koi fish in the courtyard pond seem to float in mid-air, surrounded by vibrant red maple leaves, creating a truly zen atmosphere. Midway up the mountain, there's a ten-minute stroll with a breathtaking view of the sea. Even in the flowerless winter, the climb is well worth the effort!

To experience the essence of Kamakura's allure, consider the following two-day itinerary:

After breakfast, take the Enoden Line for two stops to Hase, aiming to visit the temple before 9 a.m. for a peaceful experience. Don't forget to take snapshots with the cheerful little monk statues.

Once you've explored Hase-dera, head to the picturesque Enoshima Island. Upon disembarking, you'll see Mt. Fuji on your right.

Along the way, indulge in various local snacks like small silver fish pastries and squid pancakes—both highly recommended. You can also try the small silver fish rice, though personally, I found it average.

As the afternoon wanes, seize the opportunity for cinematic moments at Kamakura High School and the Enoden seafront crossing, immortalizing your journey with each click of the camera. Alternatively, bid farewell to Kamakura and return to Tokyo, cherishing the memories of an unforgettable escapade.

In Kamakura, every moment is an invitation to explore, discover, and embrace the magic of this hidden gem.
