Discover Kyoto's Enchanting Night at Nijo Castle
Kyoto might not be famous for its nightlife, but during the autumn foliage season, Nijo Castle hosts a captivating illumination event. This year, the renowned Japanese digital art collective, Naked, curated the nighttime lighting. Their focus on domestic themes offers a unique perspective compared to teamLab's previous installations.
I bought my ticket in advance at a convenience store, ensuring a smooth entry during the less crowded hours and avoiding long queues for same-day tickets.
Years ago, Nijo Castle left a muted impression on me. This time, however, it felt surprisingly moving. By day, the castle exudes grandeur and solemnity, but at night, it transforms into a dazzling spectacle. The Tang-mon Gate's golden leaf carvings, featuring dragons, cranes, and pine, stand magnificently against the Ninomaru Palace backdrop. Kyoto-inspired Ikebana floral arrangements line the pathways.
The Eightfold Fence Garden at night creates a captivating interplay of light and shadow. The Penglai stones and their reflections in the water cast a serene yet powerful ambiance. While this year's autumn foliage is average, the maples within Nijo Castle still boast vibrant hues, illuminated by strategically placed lights, resembling a fiery cloud.
Contemporary artistic lighting enhances the castle's architecture and walls, presenting an atmosphere distinct from daytime. This blend of ancient and modern evokes a timeless beauty. The traditional paper lantern-style streetlights at Nijo Castle particularly caught my eye. Fallen gingko leaves become an integral part of the lighting, akin to artworks themselves.
Kyoto is both easy and challenging to explore. It is easy because every corner holds famous landmarks. It is challenging because Kyoto invites you to savor the aesthetic pleasures of every flower and leaf rather than rushing through. I can finally appreciate Kyoto – a sign of personal growth!
