If you're dreaming of a serene hot spring experience in the heart of a forest, Ginkonyu Onsen (銀婚湯) in Hokkaido is a must-visit ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Nestled in a tranquil valley, this secluded hot spring inn is located near the Otoshibe Station (落部駅), accessible by train from Hakodate Station (函館駅). The area is untouched by modern developments, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The inn’s decor is rustic and elegant, creating a serene and refined atmosphere.

Besides the spacious public bath, Ginkonyu offers open-air hot springs, including private baths perfect for families to enjoy together.

A Historic and Romantic Retreat

Ginkonyu, named in honor of the Japanese Emperor Taishō’s silver wedding anniversary, coincided with the inn's founders' own silver wedding celebration. This makes it a popular destination for couples celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. The inn’s grounds feature symbolic elements like intertwined trees and embracing rocks, enhancing the romantic atmosphere for couples and honeymooners.

Unique Hot Springs

The inn boasts five distinctive open-air hot springs, all available for private use by reservation. Each hot spring offers a unique setting: some are carved from logs (Tochini no Yu), others are surrounded by rounded stones (Donguri no Yu), and some give the feeling of being in a treehouse (Momiji no Yu). In winter, you can enjoy the breathtaking snowy landscape while soaking in the warm waters. Additionally, there are foot baths available for all guests.

Upon arrival, staff will provide you with a hot spring map and a key. Following the map, you’ll cross a suspension bridge over a creek, leading you to the hidden outdoor baths deep in the forest. The journey itself is refreshing, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of flowing water.

Seasonal and Local Cuisine

Beyond the natural beauty and unique hot springs, Ginkonyu offers cuisine that changes with the seasons, featuring local mountain vegetables, fresh fish, and free-range chicken. After a relaxing hot spring bath in the chilly winter, there's nothing better than enjoying a hot chicken nabemono (Japanese hot pot).

Important Information

  • The hot springs are exclusively for guests staying at Ginkonyu Onsen Ryokan
  • The nearest station, Otoshibe Station (落部駅), has only five trains stopping daily, so plan your journey accordingly.
  • From Otoshibe Station, Ginkonyu is a 10-kilometer drive, but the inn provides a shuttle service for guests.
