If you find yourself in Kyoto with some time to spare, don't miss out on "Wagyu Volcano OAGARI" ! Located near Gion and just a short walk from Kiyomizu-dera Temple, this unique restaurant is easily accessible. From Gion-Shijo Station (祇園四条駅), take exit 7 and walk approximately 500 meters to reach your destination.

Finding Your Way

While the restaurant's entrance may be modest, it's relatively easy to locate. A quaint spiral staircase leads you to the third floor where the restaurant is situated. Operating hours are from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Keep in mind, seating is limited and there might be a long queue during peak times.

Beat the Crowd

To avoid a long wait, arrive just before opening time. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, but guests receive a number upon arrival and can opt for a text notification when their table is ready. This allows you to explore nearby spots like Gion (Kyoto's geisha district), Yasaka-jinja Shrine, and Hanamikoji Street while waiting.

Menu Highlights

The menu is thoughtfully provided in both Japanese and English. There are three main dish options: Wagyu Volcano (Volcano wagyu rice), Wagyu Raw yukhoe (Raw beef rice), and A5 Premium Wagyu Steak (A5 wagyu rice). On the left side of the menu, you can choose from various toppings such as extra wagyu beef, sea urchin (uni), scallops, eel, and salmon roe.

Signature Dish

For first-timers, I highly recommend the Wagyu Volcano. This dish features thin slices of wagyu beef on a bed of rice, topped with a raw egg yolk. While adding toppings like scallops and sea urchin increases the price, it's well worth it. The base price without toppings is around 2000 yen, but a fully loaded version can cost up to 20,000 yen – an indulgence that's truly unforgettable.

A Feast for the Senses

During my visit, I splurged on three servings of sea urchin, one serving of scallops, and one serving of salmon roe. The combination of fresh seafood and rich wagyu beef created a symphony of flavors. If you prefer your beef cooked, you can heat it in the provided broth until medium-rare. For a unique twist, try adding some tea to create a flavorful Chazuke (Japanese dish of pouring hot tea over rice), perfectly balancing the rich tastes.

Wagyu Volcano OAGARI offers excellent value and exceeded my expectations. When in Kyoto, make sure to add this culinary delight to your itinerary!
