Discover Usuya: A Hidden Gem for Unagi Lovers in Kyoto

KyotoRestaurantFoodieExperienceUnagi

If you're searching for delectable yet budget-friendly unagi (eel) dishes in Kyoto, Usuya (碓屋) is an absolute gem. This restaurant boasts a diverse array of unagi preparations, featuring premium eel sourced from Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures. The eel is freshly prepared upon order, and while the flavors rival those of some high-end establishments, the prices are refreshingly more accessible.

📍 Japan, 〒604-8374 Kyoto, Nakagyo Ward, Kamikawaracho, 58

Usuya strikes a perfect balance between culinary excellence and affordability. Nestled in the heart of Kyoto's most vibrant neighborhood, the Sanjo Shopping Street, this charming restaurant has even caught the attention of local television. Run by a husband-and-wife duo, the place exudes a warm, homely atmosphere. During my visit, I noticed their young daughter diligently working on her homework in a corner, with kind-hearted patrons occasionally offering help - a touching display of community spirit.

The menu at Usuya goes far beyond the classic Unadon (Grilled Eel Rice Bowl). You'll find an impressive selection including unagi liver, Unagi Yanagawa Nabe (Eel Hot Pot), and crispy fried eel bones. In essence, it's a treasure trove of unagi delights. Additionally, they offer fresh sashimi, fine Japanese sake, and an assortment of traditional Kyoto home-style dishes.

A Must-Try: Signature Unadon

The crowning glory of Usuya is undoubtedly their signature unadon. For those with a penchant for rich, indulgent flavors, this dish is nothing short of a Kyoto masterpiece. The eel is beautifully succulent, with its natural oils expertly grilled to enhance its irresistible aroma. The skin achieves the perfect crisp, offering a satisfying crunch with each bite. The accompanying rice is equally impressive - they use premium-grade Omi Rice, renowned for its distinctive flavor and texture. Paired with a secret sauce, it's so delicious you might find yourself polishing off a generous portion without even realizing it.

Unadon at Usuya, an unagi restaurant in Kyoto: Rich and indulgent flavors of grilled eel

In comparison to Kyoto's top-rated unadon at Okuniya Mambei (大國屋 鰻兵衞), I found that while Okuniya's eel has a slightly firmer texture and less crispy skin, it strikes an excellent balance in richness. Usuya's rendition is a touch more indulgent, yet manages to avoid feeling overly heavy.

An Unexpected Delight: Grilled Unagi Liver

The grilled unagi liver is another standout dish that shouldn't be missed. It's remarkably tender and juicy, with a delicately crisp exterior that carries a hint of smokiness. The flavors harmonize beautifully with the sweet-salty sauce, and any trace of fishiness is completely absent. Instead, you're treated to a rich, almost cheese-like experience that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

High-Quality Sashimi at Great Prices

The sashimi selection at Usuya varies daily, depending on the fresh catch. Despite the high quality, prices remain surprisingly reasonable. I sampled the medium-fatty tuna sashimi, which rivaled the richness and sweetness of fattier cuts. It melted effortlessly in my mouth, all for the modest price of 320 yen - an exceptional value. A noteworthy detail is the wasabi, freshly grated from shark skin in the tradition of high-end ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants). The aroma and flavor of freshly grated wasabi are unmistakable from the first taste.

For solo diners, a half portion of unadon typically suffices. During my visit, I enjoyed a half portion of unadon, tuna sashimi, and unagi liver, with the total bill coming to just 4,000 yen - a genuine bargain for the quality offered. If you're planning a visit, be sure to check their operating hours on Google Maps, as they're closed on Wednesdays.
