Discover Nara: A Perfect One-Day Travel Itinerary

NaraItinerary

Nara's attractions are quite concentrated, so it doesn't matter where you start your tour. However, if you plan to hike up Wakakusa Mountain to catch the breathtaking sunset, the following route will save you a lot of unnecessary detours:

Start at Nara Station (奈良駅) and head to Tōdai-ji Temple (東大寺)

Tōdai-ji Temple is the world's largest wooden structure. At the entrance, you'll find two 8-meter wooden guardian deities. Inside the main hall, the 15-meter bronze Great Buddha is awe-inspiring. There's a large wooden pillar with a hole at the bottom, and Japanese students crawl through it for good luck in exams. If you have an upcoming test, why not give it a try?

Explore Nara Park (奈良公園) and head to Kasuga Taisha Shrine (春日大社)

After Tōdai-ji Temple, walk to Nara Park. Across the park, you'll find the path leading to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. On the way, you'll see the bus stop for Mount Wakakusa. If you prefer the bus, check the timetable before entering Kasuga Taisha Shrine to plan your visit. Alternatively, you can walk up the mountain in about 20 minutes. Remember, ticket sales and mountain access end at 5 pm, so arrive on time.

Enjoy the sunset at Mount Wakakusa

Once on Wakakusa Mountain, take your time to wander and enjoy the beautiful sunset. If you like amulets, don't miss the exquisite ones at Tōdai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.

Tips for Interacting with Nara's Deer

With the recent surge in tourism, Nara's deer are well-fed and polite. They even bow to express their gratitude. However, if you want to interact with them, please be cautious and gentle to avoid being bitten.

Nara is a fantastic place for a leisurely stroll, offering picturesque sights from dawn till dusk. Enjoy your hassle-free day in this beautiful city!
